How to use Lha.run to decompress your files using Shell (aka CLI, AmigaDos)

Back to Home | Workbench 3.1 Guide Contents | Site Map

In this chapter we will decompress lha files.

1. Please make sure you have downloaded and copied lha.run to C:\Program Files\WinUAE\Hard Disks\Programs directory. You can download lha.run from Here or http://main.aminet.net/util/arc/lha.run

2. Next re-launch the WinUAE program, left click the config you made, click the Load button and click OK/Start to start emulation.

3. When workbench is booted you should see Ram Disk, Programs and System. Double click System, double click the next System drawer in the window that opened, and then double click the Shell program to open Amiga DOS. Amiga DOS is similar to MS-DOS but is much better ;-)

4a. Now type: Programs:lha.run Ram: and press Return/Enter

4b. Type: Copy Ram:lha_68020 C:lha and press Return/Enter

You should now have lha installed. (You will notice three different versions of lha optimised for three different CPU speeds. The one we are using is optimised for the 68020 CPU.) Now we can decompress our files.

5. Now we’ll extract the Installer-43_3.lha archive, So type:
lha x programs:Installer-43_3.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

6. Now we’ll extract the Picasso96.lha archive, So type:
lha x programs:picasso96.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

7. Next we’ll extract the Scalos-V1.2b.lha archive, So type:
lha x programs:Scalos-V1.2b.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

8. Next we’ll extract the mui38usr.lha archive, So type:
lha x programs:mui38usr.lha programs: and press Return/Enter.

9. Icon replacements (two options)

a. Magic Workbench Icons are 8 colour icons for use with basic workbench setups and don’t use as much memory. The version we will be installing is shareware so some icons have been blanked. (Recommended only if you want to enhance the looks but you don’t want to install Scalos or ClassAct, and if you are not using JIT)

If you want Magic Workbench Icons then extract the magicwb2.1p.lha archive, by typing:
lha x programs:magicwb2.1p.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

b. NewIcons are based on a 32-colour palette (you need Scalos or the ClassAct gadgets to view in OS 3) These are freeware. (Recommended if you are planning on installing Scalos, Picasso and use with WinUAE JIT settings)

If you want NewIcons then extract the newicons46.lha archive, by typing:
lha x programs:newicons46.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

Skip step a if you are going to use New Icons.
Skip step b but follow step 8a if you are going to use Magic Workbench icons.

10. Next we’ll extract the classact2demo.lha archive, So type:
lha x programs:classact2demo.lha programs: and press Return/Enter.

N.B. Skip step 9 if you are:

11. Next we’ll extract the WHDLoad_usr.lha archive, so, type in:
lha x programs:WHDLoad_usr.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

12. Next we’ll extract the AmiCDROM-1.15.lha archive, so, type in:
lha x programs:AmiCDROM-1.15.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

13. Next we’ll extract the AWeb_APL34_full_020.lha archive, so, type in:
lha x programs:AWeb_APL34_full_020.lha programs: and press Return/Enter

14. Delete the old lha files, unless you want to keep them for backup, from within Shell:-

Type: delete programs:Installer-43_3.lha and press Return/Enter

Type: delete programs:Picasso96.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:Scalos-V1.2b.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:mui38usr.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:newicons46.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:magicwb2.1p.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:classact2demo.lha and press Return/Enter
Type: delete programs:WHDLoad_usr.lha and press Return/Enter

Type: delete programs:AmiCDROM-1.15.lha and press Return/Enter

Type: delete programs:AWeb_APL34_full_020.lha and press Return/Enter

Type: delete programs:lha.run and press Return/Enter

Then, close the shell window by typing in endcli and press Return/Enter

Or from workbench by:-

a. Close the shell by typing in endcli and press Return/Enter
b. Close the 2 open windows by clicking the square on the top left-hand of each window.
c. Double click on programs then go to the menu (move mouse to top of screen and hold right mouse button down.)
d. Hover your mouse over Window, then Show and when All Files is Highlighted then let go of right mouse button.
e. Select the old lha file, go to the menu as before but hover your mouse over Icons and Delete... When Delete... is Highlighted then let go of right mouse button.
